Ohio Sen. Jon Husted (R) pushed back on a campaign advertisement run by Ohio gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy (R) that features the mother of Ramaswamy’s opponent, The Hill reported.
The Hill reported that Husted told The Associated Press in a statement on Wednesday that he “would not have run” the ad. The video initially debuted online, according to The Hill.
The Guardian reported that Republican congresswoman Nancy Mace called the ad “shameful, disgusting” and said it would be remembered as one of the most offensive advertisements of this election season.
The Guardian also reported that Amy Acton, Ramaswamy’s opponent, responded to the ad by telling a group of voters that her mother was not well and that Ramaswamy should not have exploited her.
According to The Guardian, Acton’s brother had earlier in the week criticized the ad in a statement released by Acton’s campaign.
Neither The Hill nor The Guardian, in the reporting summarized here, describes a response from Ramaswamy to the criticism. The available summaries also do not say whether the ad remains in circulation.
