The White House said Friday that First Lady Melania Trump had brokered an upcoming ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in Ukraine. According to a report by Ben Finley of The Associated Press published by PBS NewsHour, the ceasefire is intended to allow for humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians.

The Hill reported that the White House said in a press release Friday morning that the localized ceasefire will begin Oct. 29, with both nations agreeing to temporarily stop all military action in the city. The stated purpose, the outlet reported, is "to allow for humanitarian aid to enter" the city.

BBC News reported that the White House described Oleshky as "on brink of disaster", and that residents have had to eat garden weeds to survive. The outlet also reported that Ukraine and Russia have not confirmed the truce.

The three reports agree that the White House made the announcement but differ on timing and confirmation. PBS NewsHour described the ceasefire as upcoming, The Hill gave Oct. 29 as its start date, and BBC News reported that neither Ukraine nor Russia had confirmed it. The reports do not describe how civilians would be evacuated.

Each of the three outlets attributed Trump's role in the arrangement to the White House, and none of the summaries reviewed describe independent confirmation of that role. The Hill's report was written by Suryatapa Chakraborty.
