Redistricting Without the Team Jersey

A The Nation desk reading of redistricting, filed 1997-07.

From the file. Written for the paper dated July 1997. Opened in the public stacks July 14, 2026.

In the wake of the 1990 Census, the once-celebrated process of redistricting has devolved into a spectacle of partisanship, leaving voters caught in the crossfire of political maneuvering. As both major parties scramble to redraw the lines, the fundamental purpose of redistricting - ensuring fair representation - has been drowned out by the clamor of partisan interests.

The Process Under Scrutiny

The redistricting process, which occurs every decade following the national census, is meant to reflect population shifts and changes within states. However, as we enter the latter half of 1997, it is becoming increasingly clear that both Democrats and Republicans are more interested in solidifying their power than in creating districts that represent the true diversity of their constituencies. This is not merely a problem of the left or the right; it is a systemic failure that undermines the very foundation of democracy.

As state legislatures across the country engage in this complex process, the results often resemble a game of chess rather than a fair representation of voters. Districts are being drawn to pack like-minded voters together or to dilute their influence across broader areas. This technique, known as gerrymandering, is now a common practice, and it is not confined to one political party. Both sides have played this game for too long, prioritizing political gain over the public good.

Partisan Excesses and Their Consequences

The Democrats, emboldened by their control in many states, have not hesitated to utilize gerrymandering tactics to their advantage. By crafting districts that favor their constituencies, they risk alienating moderate voters who find themselves without a viable choice. On the other hand, Republicans, particularly in states where they hold the majority, are employing similar strategies to maintain their grip on power. What results is a political landscape that is increasingly polarized, leaving little room for compromise or collaboration.

This excess on both sides reflects a troubling trend: the prioritization of party loyalty over civic duty. Politicians are more concerned with maintaining their team jersey than with representing the needs of their constituents. Voters are left feeling disillusioned, as they realize that their voices are being drowned out by the cacophony of party politics.

“Redistricting should be about fair representation, not about retaining political power.”

A Call for Accountability

In this climate of manipulation, accountability is sorely lacking. Many citizens are unaware of the intricacies involved in the redistricting process, allowing politicians to operate largely unchallenged. It is imperative that we demand transparency in how these decisions are made. State legislatures must be held accountable for the choices they make when drawing district lines, and citizens must be encouraged to engage in this crucial process.

Some states have begun to explore independent commissions that remove partisan interests from the redistricting process. This move has been met with resistance from both major parties, who fear losing their ability to control electoral outcomes. But as we have seen in recent years, maintaining the status quo is not a viable option. The current system only perpetuates a cycle of discontent and disengagement among voters.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward, it is essential that we advocate for a redistricting process that prioritizes fairness and representation over political expediency. The current state of affairs is unsustainable, and if we continue to allow the extremes of both sides to dictate the terms, we risk further alienating the very voters we claim to serve.

Moreover, we must recognize that the stakes are higher than mere party politics. The health of our democracy is at risk, and it is incumbent upon us as citizens to demand better from our elected officials. We must challenge them to put aside their team jerseys and work towards a system that honors the will of the people.
