From the file. Written for the paper dated June 2020. Opened in the public stacks July 14, 2026.

In the wake of recent upheaval, both left and right populists have seized the moment to amplify their agendas, often at the expense of reasoned discourse and effective governance.

The Rise of the Populist Narrative

As protests erupted across the nation in response to systemic injustice, the populist movements on both sides of the political spectrum have taken center stage. The left has rallied around calls for defunding the police and dismantling oppressive systems, while the right has responded with a fervent defense of traditional values and law enforcement. However, the fervor of these movements often leads to overclaims that threaten the possibility of meaningful dialogue and reform.

The Left's Overreach

On the left, there has been a significant push to radically transform institutions that many believe to be inherently flawed. While the calls for racial justice and police reform are necessary and long overdue, some activists have advocated for the complete abolition of police forces. This extreme stance, while rooted in a desire for justice, risks alienating moderates who might otherwise support reform efforts. By overclaiming, they threaten to undermine the legitimacy of their cause, making it easier for detractors to label the movement as extreme and unworkable.

The Right's Reactionary Response

Conversely, the right’s reaction has often mirrored the left’s excesses, albeit in a different vein. In an effort to counter the narrative of systemic injustice, many on the right have doubled down on a rhetoric that dismisses legitimate concerns about police brutality and racial inequality. This dismissal not only serves to entrench divisions but also risks fostering an environment where constructive dialogue becomes impossible. The insistence on a “law and order” narrative can easily morph into an overclaim that undermines the complex realities of societal issues.

The Cost of Overclaiming

Both sides are guilty of failing to engage in nuanced discussions. When populists overclaim, they often ignore the intricate layers of the issues at hand. The left's radical proposals can overshadow more moderate approaches that might gain broader support, while the right’s insistence on maintaining the status quo can lead to stagnation in addressing injustices. This failure of oversight can result in a backlash that ultimately harms the very communities they intend to support or protect.

The Path Forward

To move past these excesses, both sides must embrace a more measured approach. It is crucial to recognize the validity of the grievances being expressed while also considering the implications of proposed solutions. This means that left-leaning activists should temper their demands for radical change with practical, actionable reforms that can garner wider support. Simultaneously, the right should acknowledge the need for reform in policing and societal structures without resorting to blanket dismissals of legitimate concerns.

In the spirit of constructive criticism, both sides must strive for a balance between passion and pragmatism. Populism can serve as a powerful catalyst for change, but it must be anchored in a commitment to dialogue and understanding. If not, the very movements that seek to address injustice may instead contribute to a cycle of division and frustration.

The Role of Leadership

Leadership plays a pivotal role in steering populist movements toward responsible discourse. Leaders who can articulate a vision that bridges divides and emphasizes shared values are essential in these turbulent times. Those in positions of influence should prioritize unity over division, encouraging supporters to engage in respectful debate rather than inflammatory rhetoric. This is particularly crucial as the nation grapples with deeply entrenched issues of race and justice, where the stakes are incredibly high.

Conclusion

As we navigate this complex landscape, it is imperative for both left and right populists to recognize the potential dangers of overclaiming. The quiet failure of oversight could lead to missed opportunities for genuine reform and progress. By fostering a culture of dialogue, empathy, and pragmatism, we can not only address the grievances that fuel populism but also work towards a more equitable society.
