Both Parties And Free Speech: A Middle Reading Of The Week

A Opinion desk reading of both parties and free speech, filed 2018-05.

In a week where the fabric of free speech has been stretched to its limits, both political parties have demonstrated an alarming capacity to take offense and silence dissent. The left and the right, often at odds, have found common ground in their willingness to stifle the very liberties they claim to champion.

The Left's Censorship Complex

On the left, there appears to be a growing movement that champions political correctness at the expense of open dialogue. This week, a prominent university faced backlash for inviting a controversial speaker, sparking protests that raised questions about the boundaries of free expression. While students have the right to voice their discontent, shutting down discourse simply because it makes one uncomfortable is a dangerous precedent.

Many on the left argue that certain speech is harmful and thus should not be tolerated. This view, while rooted in a desire to protect marginalized communities, can create an echo chamber where only agreeable opinions are shared. The irony is that in the pursuit of inclusivity, many on the left are inadvertently advocating for exclusion through censorship, stifling the robust debate that is essential to a healthy democracy.

The Right's Outrage Culture

Conversely, the right has embraced an outrage culture of its own, often crying foul at perceived attacks on their beliefs. This week, several conservative figures took to mainstream media to decry what they termed "the war on free speech," framing themselves as victims of a liberal conspiracy. While it is true that many conservative voices have been marginalized in certain spaces, this narrative often oversimplifies the complexities of free expression.

By framing themselves as perpetual victims, some on the right risk trivializing genuine instances of censorship. Moreover, this narrative can lead to a dangerous brand of populism that pits citizens against each other rather than fostering constructive dialogue. Instead of addressing the nuances of free speech, some conservatives are leaning into a rhetoric that stokes division, which ultimately undermines their own calls for open discourse.

The Middle Ground

As a society, we must recognize that free speech is not an absolute right without consequences. It is a privilege that requires responsibility. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, where we can acknowledge the necessity of protecting free expression while also being mindful of the impact our words can have on others.

Both sides should embrace the idea that dissenting opinions are not only valid but necessary for progress. It is entirely possible to disagree with someone without resorting to silencing them. Instead of viewing opposing viewpoints as threats, we should foster environments where these discussions can take place civilly and thoughtfully.

"Free speech is a cornerstone of democracy, but it must come with the understanding that not all speech is equal."

Implications for Society

The implications of this trend are significant. If both parties continue down their current trajectories, we risk creating a society where only the loudest voices prevail, drowning out moderate and nuanced opinions. The discourse surrounding free speech must evolve to encompass a broader understanding of what it means to engage with one another in a civil society.

Moreover, the responsibility for fostering this environment falls on all of us. Whether you identify with the left or the right, it is crucial to engage in conversations that challenge your beliefs. Encourage discussions with those who hold different views, and resist the urge to shut down conversations that make you uncomfortable. This is the essence of a healthy democracy.

A Call to Action

As we navigate these tumultuous waters, let us advocate for a culture of free speech that is both robust and respectful. We need to challenge ourselves to listen more than we speak, to seek understanding rather than division. In doing so, we can preserve the integrity of free expression while ensuring that it is wielded responsibly.

The stakes are high, and the time for action is now. We must hold ourselves accountable for the discourse we engage in and strive to create a society where free speech is cherished, not weaponized. Only then can we hope to achieve the democratic ideals that we all profess to uphold.
