The Week in Scandal And Process

A The Nation desk reading of scandal and process, filed 2016-08.

From the file. Written for the paper dated August 2016. Opened in the public stacks July 14, 2026.

In a week marked by a flurry of public claims and counterclaims, the landscape of American politics remains as scandal-ridden as ever. The rhetoric from both sides of the aisle has reached a fever pitch, often overshadowing the very processes that govern our nation.

Public Claims: The Left's Outrage

On the left, the Democratic National Committee's email leak continues to reverberate through the political sphere. Critics of the DNC have seized upon the revelations to paint a picture of a party that undermined its own candidates in favor of the establishment. To many, this is an affront to democratic principles. Senator Bernie Sanders' supporters have been vocal, arguing that the party's actions not only disenfranchised voters but also compromised the integrity of the primary process.

Yet, the left’s response has not been without its own excesses. Calls for a complete overhaul of the party structure, while understandable, risk alienating moderates who may feel that the party is veering too far left. There is a fine line between advocating for reform and creating divisions that could ultimately weaken the party's chances in the general election.

Public Claims: The Right's Deflection

On the other side of the aisle, the Republican Party finds itself grappling with its own set of scandals. Donald Trump’s controversial remarks regarding various minority groups have drawn sharp rebukes from political opponents and some within his party. However, instead of addressing these comments head-on, many Republican leaders have chosen to deflect, focusing instead on alleged missteps of the Clinton campaign.

This pattern of deflection serves to highlight a troubling aspect of current political discourse. Instead of engaging in substantive debate about policy and the future of the country, many Republican leaders seem more inclined to dismiss criticism by pointing fingers, often resorting to the "both sides do it" argument. This approach may resonate with the base, but it does little to foster a constructive political environment.

The Process: Overshadowed by Scandal

As scandals capture headlines, the legislative process continues to be overshadowed. Important bills aimed at addressing issues like gun control and healthcare reform linger in limbo, often sidelined by the latest political drama. Lawmakers who once championed bi-partisan efforts now find themselves trapped in an adversarial dynamic, too consumed by the fight to make any meaningful progress.

One glaring example is the debate surrounding gun control in the wake of mass shootings. While both parties express sympathy for victims, substantive proposals for reform are often dismissed in favor of political posturing. This failure to act illustrates a dangerous trend where political expediency trumps the urgent needs of the American public.

Finding Common Ground Amidst the Chaos

Amidst the chaos, there is a growing chorus of voices advocating for a return to civility and cooperation. Many citizens express frustration with the current political climate and are calling for leaders who prioritize the needs of the people over the demands of party loyalty. This sentiment is perhaps best encapsulated in the growing number of grassroots movements that aim to push for accountability and transparency in government.

These movements, while diverse in their goals, share a common thread: the desire for a political system that serves all Americans, not just the political elite. They challenge both sides to rise above the fray and focus on solutions rather than scandals. However, the path forward is fraught with challenges, as entrenched interests on both sides resist change.

The Road Ahead: A Call for Integrity

As we move further into this election cycle, it is critical for both Democrats and Republicans to acknowledge the excesses within their ranks. The public's trust in government institutions is waning, and the continuous cycle of scandal only exacerbates this problem. Leaders must strive for integrity in both their words and actions, focusing on the issues that matter most to the American people.

The coming weeks will undoubtedly bring more revelations, more claims, and more scandals. However, amidst the noise, there remains a glimmer of hope that the American political landscape can shift towards one that values process as much as it does passion. It is time for our leaders to step up and demonstrate that governance can be about more than just winning the next news cycle.
