Both Parties And Free Speech Without the Team Jersey

A Opinion desk reading of both parties and free speech, filed 2015-07.

In a politically charged environment, the discourse surrounding free speech is often drowned out by partisan agendas. Both the left and right have exhibited tendencies that undermine the very principles they espouse, especially when it comes to protecting their respective institutions.

Free Speech Under Siege

In recent months, the debate over free speech has taken center stage, with both major political parties showcasing a troubling hypocrisy. On one hand, we see left-leaning institutions advocating for speech that promotes equality and justice while simultaneously stifling dissenting opinions that challenge their narratives. On the other hand, the right vehemently defends free speech but often turns a blind eye to the intolerance exhibited by some of its own factions.

Institutional Protectionism

At the heart of this issue is the instinct of institutions to protect themselves. Universities have become battlegrounds for ideological warfare, where the pursuit of knowledge is overshadowed by the need to maintain a particular brand of political correctness. It is not uncommon to witness speakers disinvited from campuses or protests erupting to drown out voices deemed offensive. This is not merely a fight for social justice; it often reflects an underlying fear of losing control over the narrative.

Conversely, we see the right rallying around free speech when it serves their interests, such as in the case of controversial figures speaking at political rallies. However, this same right has also seen segments of its base engage in harassment and intimidation tactics against those who oppose their views. The hypocrisy is glaring, as both sides selectively apply the principle of free speech based on whether it aligns with their ideological framework.

Polarization and its Consequences

The polarization of American politics has created an environment where compromise seems impossible. In this climate, the idea of free speech becomes weaponized, used as a tool to rally support rather than a fundamental right to be protected for all. When institutions prioritize their own interests over the free exchange of ideas, they erode the very foundations of democracy.

Finding Common Ground

To truly uphold the value of free speech, we must reject the notion of team jerseys. The defense of free expression must extend beyond the confines of our ideological comfort zones. It is imperative that we create spaces where all voices can be heard, even those that challenge our beliefs. This requires a collective effort to promote discourse that is civil and respectful, rather than combative and dismissive.

Both the left and the right must confront their own excesses. The left must recognize that silencing dissenting opinions is antithetical to the principles of justice and equality it seeks to champion. Meanwhile, the right must acknowledge that the protection of free speech does not come without responsibility, and that their own ranks are not immune to the dangers of intolerance.

Conclusion

As we navigate this contentious landscape, it is crucial that we hold both parties accountable for their actions regarding free speech. It is not enough to claim allegiance to the principle; we must actively work to protect it, even when it is uncomfortable. True free speech is not about agreeing with everyone; it is about creating a culture where diverse opinions can coexist without fear of retribution.
