Both Parties And Free Speech Without the Team Jersey

A Opinion desk reading of both parties and free speech, filed 2009-09.

From the file. Written for the paper dated September 2009. Opened in the public stacks July 14, 2026.

As we navigate the increasingly polarized political landscape of 2009, the issue of free speech has become a battleground for both the left and the right, where the preservation of individual liberties often takes a backseat to the desire of institutions to protect their own interests.

The Institutional Shield

The very essence of free speech is under siege, but not from the government alone. Instead, it is the institutions - be they universities, corporations, or media entities - that seem most intent on stifling dissent under the banner of protecting the collective. The left often champions the cause of marginalized voices, yet it simultaneously engages in a form of censorship that favors certain narratives while silencing others. This selective endorsement of free speech is particularly evident on college campuses, where speakers deemed controversial are often disinvited or protested against, not because of their ideas, but rather because of their association with ideologies that clash with the prevailing campus culture.

On the other side, the right has also weaponized free speech, claiming a kind of victimhood as they rally against what they perceive as a liberal elite bent on erasing their voices. This narrative has gained traction, leading to a distorted view that equates criticism of their ideals with outright suppression. The reality is that while some voices may feel drowned out, the right has significant platforms from which to amplify its message, including a powerful media apparatus that thrives on outrage and sensationalism.

Double Standards and Hypocrisy

Both sides display a troubling double standard in their approach to free speech. The left often champions the rights of minority communities to express their grievances, yet when it comes to more conservative viewpoints, they are quick to label dissenting opinions as hate speech. The right, conversely, often applauds the freedom of speech when it aligns with their political agenda but becomes incensed when faced with opposing views that challenge their foundational beliefs.

"The preservation of individual liberties often takes a backseat to the desire of institutions to protect their own interests."

This hypocrisy serves only to deepen the divide between the two factions. The left’s call for sensitivity and inclusivity often leads to the suppression of ideas that may be uncomfortable. Meanwhile, the right’s insistence on unfettered free speech can sometimes manifest as a refusal to engage with the ramifications of their rhetoric, particularly when it comes to issues of race, gender, and sexuality. Each side believes they are the defenders of free speech, but they are merely wearing different jerseys in the same game.

The Role of Media

Media institutions play a pivotal role in this discourse, but their commitment to free speech often appears contingent upon the political leanings of their ownership and audience. Many mainstream outlets claim to uphold journalistic integrity and a commitment to free expression, yet they frequently engage in self-censorship to avoid backlash from powerful interest groups. This is not just a left-leaning phenomenon; conservative outlets have also been known to suppress narratives that could alienate their base.

The result is a fragmented media landscape where individuals are fed a steady diet of information that confirms their pre-existing beliefs. This echo chamber effect hinders critical discourse and undermines the very concept of a marketplace of ideas. As both sides entrench themselves in their respective camps, the prospect of genuine dialogue diminishes, leaving only a cacophony of competing grievances.

Finding Common Ground

To reclaim the integrity of free speech, we must move beyond the team jersey mentality that has gripped both political tribes. It is imperative that we recognize the value of engaging with ideas that challenge us and the responsibility that comes with exercising our free speech rights. Institutions must foster environments where diverse viewpoints can be expressed without fear of retribution or censorship.

Moreover, individuals on both sides of the aisle need to take a step back and critically assess their own biases. Are we truly advocating for free speech, or are we simply rallying behind causes that align with our beliefs? The moment we place our political allegiances above our commitment to free expression, we undermine the very foundation of democracy.
