About the Desk
The American Intelligencer is a journal of record habit: explain American public life without joining a team. The motto is older than the web. The public edition is new to most readers. That combination is the point.
The middle seat
We are not a hard-left paper and not a hard-right paper. When either pole skips process, invents certainty, or sells panic as patriotism, we say so. Structural explanations beat slogans.
The Vault
The Vault holds desk files framed by era from the 1970s forward. Each piece shows a desk-file date and a digitization date for the public edition. You are not looking at a brand-new opinion blog. You are walking into open stacks.
How to read us
- Prefer the boring mechanism over the viral villain.
- When we cite the outside world, we link real sources.
- When we reconstruct desk thinking about a past decade, we label it as a vault file.
- If a claim cannot be checked, we do not print it as fact.
